Derek and Jean Preece

Family: CoupleDerek Preece

Location: Great Barr, West Bromwich

Property type: Semi-detachedJean Preece

Bedrooms: 3

Current circumstances: "We have two large compost bins into which goes all our vegetable peelings, teabags, coffee grinds, egg trays, cardboard, and shredded paper, all of which turns into very good compost, which I dig into my vegetable plot. I collect rain water to save on using tap water. Everything we can do to reduce energy in the home is done. We have a water meter, which makes you aware not to waste water. I have also down sized my car which helps reduce energy."

The Preeces also recycle as much as possible including plastic. They have two large composters in the garden and a large vegetable patch and greenhouse. They had a water meter installed about a year or so ago and have reduced their bills considerably. Use energy efficient light bulbs and only use lights when needed.

Aspirations: “We are keen on saving as much green belt as possible because without it the animals, bees, birds, wild flowers etc will dwindle; and they are essential for the environment."

Their property has a back boiler system which is 28 years old and badly needs replacing, no controls on the radiators etc. This will be looked at by Sandwell Homes in due course.

Initial survey results:

1. Current Energy Efficiency and Environmental Impact ratings

2. Home Energy Performance (What is this?)

Derek and Jean's eco-challenges: Need insulation on boiler, replacement of lighting to energy efficient throughout house, create a ‘wild meadow’ to help protect threatened species in their garden.
