Arrears
How do I get help if I am in arrears? If you are a council tenant and you have fallen into arrears with rent payments you will need to speak to us urgently. Revenue generated by the collection of rents supports our repairs, maintenance and improvement programmes and therefore rent arrears are not allowed to build up. If you are having money problems and finding it hard to pay your rent contact the Rents Team. They will come to an agreement with you to pay off the money you owe. However, should you fail to keep to this agreement you may lose your home. I am in debt - where can I get help? Several sections of this website can help and advise you on how and where to get help on your finances.
If you fall into serious rent arrears and do not comply with an agreement to pay you can be evicted. Evictions have also been carried out for severe cases of anti-social behaviour and racial harassment. What if I owe rent on a property I previously rented from the council? You will be expected to pay this off. If you are unable to pay this in a lump sum you must contact the Debt Recovery Section on 0121 569 5025 or 0121 569 5026 to make an acceptable agreement to pay by instalments. Failure to pay off this debt may result in the matter being pursued through to court to ensure recovery. In this event, you are also likely to incur court costs. |
