Gas And Electric Supplies
All council properties have an electrical supply and most have a gas service. There are controls to turn off these supplies and for your own benefit you should know where these controls are.
Electricity Safety
- Do replace worn or damaged flexes
- Do turn off mains electricity supply before replacing a fuse
- Do use childproof covers on unused sockets
- Do ensure all appliances are correctly connected
- Don't use portable appliances in the bathroom
- Don't join two pieces of flex together with tape
- Don't use damaged plugs
Solid Fuel Safety
- Do ensure you use the correct solid fuel
- Do Ensure rooms are adequately ventilated
- Do ensure the chimney is swept regularly

Gas Safety
If you smell gas ring National Grid on 0800 111 999 immediately.
- Do open doors and windows
- Do check that gas appliances are switched off
- Do turn off supply at the meter
- Don't operate electrical switches
- Don't use a naked flame
Your gas appliances should be checked every year. Sandwell Homes will send a contractor to your property to undertake these vital checks. Help us to help you by ensuring our contractor is able to access your property to do a gas safety inspection.
